MY FIRST TRIP WEST
Early in the spring of 1917 my sister, her husband, and his folks decided to move to western Colorado and for some reason they wanted me to go with them. I was more than glad to go so on the third day of April, 1917, which came on Monday, we loaded up three wagons of household goods and left from six miles east of Wynnewood, Oklahoma.
Leaving on the trip was Ethel and Bud Simmons; Bud's dad and mom; Bud's sister, Mary, and brother, Jeff; Ethel and Bud's two sons, Shorty and Bryan.
We had a bunch of cattle and horses to follow the three covered wagons and it was Jeff and I who rode horseback to keep the livestock in line to follow the wagons. We were on the road 77 days before we got where we were going. We did not make many miles each day on account of the livestock and our horse-drawn wagons. We all enjoyed every day on the trip. We had no sickness or no trouble with the stock. Before we left Oklahoma, Bud's mother made him promise we would not travel on Sundays unless we were forced to on account of water for the stock. On Saturdays we would camp over until Monday then on our way again.
The first day out we made it to Paul's Valley, Oklahoma. We spent the night there on the edge of town and early the next morning we were on our way west. We made about fifteen miles per day. The first week we made it to about five miles of Chickasha, Oklahoma.
The second week we landed on Saturday in a small town called Granite, Oklahoma. We had a nice time in this little town because there was a small show and picnic going on. Jeff, being nineteen, and I, twenty-one, enjoyed this entertainment. The others stayed at camp awaiting Monday.
The next weekend was a stop in Texas at a small town and I don't recall the name. We did have some bad luck there as one of the cows strayed off in the night and got on the railroad track. A train killed her and we had to stay over a day as the railroad company paid for the animal.
We finally landed in Amarillo, Texas and had to stay there longer than we intended to. A large herd of cattle was on the road there. I cannot remember just the number of head, but it was up in the thousands. We would have lost our bunch if they had gotten mixed with them so we kept our cattle rounded up in one little herd.
I will never forget a funny thing that happened while we were there. We had no wood to cook our meals with, so Jeff and I took a washtub and picked up cow-chips to make a fire so we could cook. Bud's mother would not eat a bite for breakfast or dinner because we had to use the cow-chips to cook with. Several times we had a hard time getting wood for cooking, but after we landed in the Rocky Mountains we had no such trouble.
After leaving Amarillo, Texas, we traveled northeast for several miles. We found the weather fine but again our biggest problem was finding enough wood for our stoves. We finally came to a town right in the northeast part of New Mexico by the name of Raton. We spent the night there and they sent me out to try to find some wood. I went out and found none. As I was coming back to camp to tell them my trouble, I saw a train with cars loaded with coal. It was standing still as I dismounted my horse and climbed up on the car and got a few lumps of coal. Of course they wondered where I got the coal and I told them what I did. We had plenty of fire that night and the next night too.
The next few days of travelingbrought us to a town named Taos, New Mexico. A few miles before we got into Taos, they sent me on ahead to find a good camping place. As I rode into town I stopped at the post office to see if we had any mail. There was a man in the post office after his mail so I asked him if he could tell me where we could find a place to camp. He was very nice and friendly and told me he had a place with plenty of water and grass for our stock. We went to his pasture, opened the gate and showed me all around. He said we could stay there as long as we wanted to. I went back down the road and met the others telling them of my discovery. They all were pleased so we moved into his pasture, closed the gate, and made ourselves at home. We stayed there three days and to top it off, it came a snow while we were there. While I was walking around in town a man ask me to join the army. He was from Santa Fe and I declined his offer. I visited Kit Carson's home and the cemetary while I was loafing around there.
Our next stop that we really liked was in a town called Tierra Amarilla, New Mexico. Again I was sent on ahead of the gang to find a camping place and I really did find a good one right in town. It had been a wagon yard. There were several small houses and plenty of stalls for our stock. There was a good fence all around it to keep our stock in. We had a kitchen and bedrooms for use to use and it did not cost a penny. The place belonged to a mexican millionaire. He was not home at the time and his daughter was in charge of all his property. They had three stores there and the girl went to each manager of the stores and told them if we bought anything to be sure and let us have it at cost. They did like she told them to do so we stayed a whole week there. The population of the town was 903 and only three white people lived there. The rest were Mexicans. When the girl found out we were leaving, she gave a party for Jeff and me. Her mother could no speak English but the girl brought her in and introduced her to all of us and then she went back into another room. Their last name was Martinez.
We made slower time after we got up in the mountains but we enjoyed the different scenery then we had seen while on the prairies. After we got away up in the mountains I saw a large rock at a distance. I made the remark that I was going to carve my name on it. We did not know whether we would come close to this big rock but each day we could see the rock and I would make the same remark. In three days traveling we came even with it but it was up above timber line but easy to see. We pitched camp and of course I pulled out for the rock. Bud, his dad, and Jeff started to go with me. After about a mile of climbing the mountain, Bud's dad and Jeff went back to the wagons but Bud and I kept climbing the steep mountain. we made it to the rock which was about one hundred feet tall. It had broken off from another rock which was about three hundred feet high. I scratched my name and Bud's on the smaller rock. We could not if we had wanted, put our names on the other because it was too high. I have never been back there but I always wanted to just to see that carving. I know that I could not climb that mountain where the rock is that I put our names as it was above timber line.
One weekend there in the high Rockies we had to pull out on Sunday morning on account of grazing for our stock. About ten o'clock that Sunday morning we came to a small town called Pagosa Springs. There was lots of grass for our stock so my brother-in-law told me to ride down to see if there was any water for our stock. I did and I found three large springs of water. Water was boiling in several places in each spring. There was a man sitting by one of the springs with a cup in his hand and he was drinking the water. I rode back up where we had our wagons parked which was about two blocks from the springs. I told them that we could not park there and they wanted to know why. Just to have a little fun I told them about the hot water so all of the bunch climbed out of the wagons and went down to see if I was telling the truth. Anyway we camped there because there was river close to the springs. The water in the springs was too hot for the stock to drink but the river water was fine. We stayed there two days on account of good grazing for our stock.
We left Pagosa Springs, Colorado and headed west through beautiful country and finally reached Cortes, Colorado. We stayed there a day or two and pulled out west to a small town called, Lewis, Colorado. we just spent a day at Lewis then went on west to a wide place and one little store but good grazing for our stock. This place was called Yellow Jacket, Colorado and that is where the folks began to look for land to homestead. We all found land to homestead and began to stake it out so we could tell just where our lines were. My farm was close to Bud's but it was not long until I was notified by the army to be ready for service. I had to register but it was quite awhile before I got my call for duty. On August 2, 1917, I caught a train for Wynnewood, Oklahoma. I got in Wynnewood on the 7th of August. I was examined for service on the 14th. I spent a long time with my sister Lillie and her husband, Newton, out east of Wynnewood. I finally went to my brother's home at a little town called Calhoun, Oklahoma. I stayed with my brother, Bill, until I was called in for army service.
