  • Note*: Jean Marks pieced and quilted a quilt that was passed down from her to future generations. "It was pieced and quilted by Mrs. Charles Jackson, your Dad's great grand mother, her mainden name being James Marks of scotch blood, while her husband Charles Jackson was and Irish Canadian at Pittsburgh, Penn. In 1830 and of scraps brought from Scotland. It was given first to Mrs. A. W. Carlton, Your Dad's grandmother then to Mrs. Pls Ragains and as mother had no girls to give it to she gave it to you and it is willed that it must be given to your daughter if you have any and should you die without a daughter. It becomes the property of your mother if she if she is living, if she is not alive it shall be the property of your oldest living sister and should you out live all your sisters and have no daughters to give it to, you may give it to the Niece of your choice, be it either a duaghter of you're sisters or a daughter of your brother. It is farther willed that this quilt is to be used when needed but it is not to be abused by making a pallet out of it as by letting kids wet on it. Surely you have received A great honor be deserved by carrying out the will of the givere, your grandmother Mrs. Pls Ragains". Quoted from a letter written by Grant Ragains to Emma Lou Ragains Sterling on February 11, 1931. Unfortunately, this heirloom was destroyed by Hurricane Carla in Texas City, Texas.
